How Portugal's 2026 Nationality Law Change Affects Residency and Naturalisation Timelines

In Flyto Relocation's enquiry dataset, published in its European Relocation Report 2026 and based on 7,396 international relocation quotes and 7,457 move enquiries, 41% of moves involved destinations Flyto groups as Southern Europe, including Spain, Italy, Portugal and Greece. Portugal accounted for 342 of the enquiries recorded in that dataset.
Portugal's Nationality Law was revised under Lei Organica n.o 1/2026, which entered into force on 19 May 2026. The residency requirement for naturalisation now varies by nationality, replacing the previous flat five-year period that applied uniformly. Applications formally submitted before the law's entry into force continue to be assessed under the prior rules. This change applies to naturalisation only and does not affect the Portuguese Golden Visa residency-by-investment programme, which retains its existing path to permanent residency and established minimum stay requirements.
