Maltepe Dental Clinic has published the scope and cost terms of its aftercare pathway for British dental tourists, answering guidance from the UK General Dental Council that tells patients to ask what aftercare a clinic provides, and who pays for remedial work, before travelling abroad.
The General Dental Council, in its patient guidance Going abroad for dental treatment, advises patients to ask what aftercare a clinic provides, what happens if they are unhappy with the results, and who pays for the extra flights, hotel and remedial work. The regulator also states that it cannot guarantee another organisation like it exists in other countries, or that the standards will be the same.

The question of what happens once treatment ends has been documented in the peer-reviewed literature. In the British Dental Journal, Shoukat Ashiti and Catherine Moshkun wrote in a 2021 paper examining whether dental tourists should be treated, re-treated or not treated at all that "the clinics abroad may tell the patients they have been discharged from their care following treatment."
Dental Clinic, based in Kadikoy, Istanbul, uses a UK consultation site and an Istanbul treatment site. Patients begin with planning at the clinic's London consultation clinic, at 92 Essex Road, N1 8LU, travel to Istanbul for treatment and in-house laboratory work, and return to the same UK site for review. The clinic identifies Dr. Yusuf Ilhan, its chief dentist, as a General Dental Council registrant, No. 304923, a record that can be checked on the GDC's public register. The clinic says he consults with patients at that site.
"The regulator asks patients what aftercare a clinic provides, and that is a fair question," said Dr. Yusuf Ilhan, chief dentist at Maltepe Dental Clinic. "The answer should be a place a patient can walk into, with a UK-registered dentist in the room, not a message sent from another country. That is why the London consultation clinic exists."
According to the clinic, the UK site is available to patients who complete primary treatment at the Istanbul practice. It provides pre-travel consultations, post-treatment check-ups and minor adjustments when clinically appropriate. Implant surgery and other primary treatment remain in Istanbul. The clinic's dental implant aftercare forms part of that follow-up pathway, with check-ups completed after primary treatment in Istanbul.
"A patient should not need to board a plane to be seen," said Dr. Alper Gurhan, co-founder of Maltepe Dental Clinic. "Our uk aftercare pathway keeps the follow-up within reach, and the patients themselves describe what that meant after they flew home."
