Livonia HVAC Contractor Lists 5 Pre-Winter Furnace Checks for Metro Detroit Homeowners

Livonia, United States - October 25, 2026 / OnPoint HVAC /

As Southeast Michigan homes switch from cooling to heating, OnPoint HVAC, a family-owned heating and cooling company based in Livonia, is asking homeowners to take a few minutes for safety checks before running their furnace through the first cold nights.

A furnace that sat idle all summer can have a clogged filter, a blocked vent or a dead carbon monoxide alarm nearby. None of these are hard to fix, but each one matters most on the coldest nights.

"Most of the no-heat calls we get in the first cold week are things a homeowner could have caught in October," said George Petrentzev, owner of OnPoint HVAC. "A fresh filter and a working CO alarm take ten minutes, and they're the two checks I'd ask every family in Livonia to do this weekend."

OnPoint HVAC's five pre-season checks:

1. Test every carbon monoxide alarm. Press the test button on each one. There should be an alarm on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas. Check the date on the back, since CO alarms wear out and need replacing on the manufacturer's schedule.
2. Replace the furnace filter. A clogged filter makes the furnace work harder and can cause it to overheat and shut off.
3. Clear the vents outside. High-efficiency furnaces vent through white PVC pipes on an outside wall. Keep them clear of leaves now and snow later.
4. Clear the area around the furnace. Keep storage boxes, paint and cleaning supplies at least three feet away.
5. Schedule a professional tune-up. A technician checks burners, the heat exchanger, gas pressure and safety controls before the furnace runs all winter.

Know the warning signs. Carbon monoxide can't be seen or smelled. Headaches, dizziness, nausea or flu-like symptoms that ease when you leave the house can be a sign of CO exposure. If a CO alarm sounds, get everyone outside and call 911. If you smell gas, leave the home and call 911 and DTE Energy's gas leak line at (800) 947-5000 from outside.

OnPoint HVAC offers furnace tune-ups, repair and replacement across Livonia, Northville, Plymouth, Canton and Novi, with same-day furnace repair available Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM. Homeowners can learn more about furnace repair in Livonia or request a free estimate.
