J&A Fence, a family-owned fence store and installation contractor serving Chester County, has announced its continued support of CADES, a Swarthmore nonprofit that serves children and adults with intellectual and physical disabilities, and its Courageous Pacers program.

CADES, which stands for Children and Adult Disability and Educational Services, provides education and therapy for people living with conditions such as cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and autism. Its programs follow individuals through every stage of life, from early intervention for infants and toddlers to a school for children and day and residential programs for adults. Based in Swarthmore, in neighboring Delaware County, CADES supports hundreds of children and adults across the area each year.

The Courageous Pacers program is organized by the CADES physical therapy team and built around students of all abilities. Children and adults who use wheelchairs or have limited mobility move through a course on adaptive therapy equipment that supports them as they walk, joined by their teachers, therapists, and members of the community. The event raises money for the programs and equipment that make that kind of participation possible, much of which falls outside what public funding and most family budgets can cover.

CADES holds the walk each year, and it draws local volunteers, students, and businesses that turn out to help raise the money the therapy team depends on. Coverage of past events has shown students taking steps with support they do not have on an ordinary day, a moment their families and therapists point to as the reason the program matters. The adaptive equipment and trained staff behind those steps carry costs that fall largely on donations.

Money raised through the walks goes toward adaptive playgrounds designed for safe use by children with physical and intellectual disabilities and toward specialized equipment for people who use wheelchairs. For a company whose daily work is building fences that make backyards safe places for children to play, the cause sits close to home. J&A Fence supports the Courageous Pacers walks as part of its involvement in the communities where its crews work, and Giunta has said the company intends to keep backing the program in the years ahead.

Owned by Joe Giunta, J&A Fence has operated in the region since 2012 and serves Chester County along with northern Delaware and Cecil County, Maryland. The company is a registered Pennsylvania Home Improvement Contractor, license PA096517, and holds Screened and Approved, Top Rated, and Elite Service designations from HomeAdvisor, a national home services platform that awards them based on background checks and customer reviews. It remains family operated, with Giunta preparing estimates himself and his sister running the office.

"You spend your days building fences that keep kids safe in their own backyards, and then you meet families who are fighting just to get their child onto a playground at all," said Joe Giunta, owner of J&A Fence. "What those therapists and parents do makes our part look small. We keep showing up for it because it is happening right here, in the same county where we make our living."
