DENVER, Colo. Lakewood-Amedex said its Phase 2-ready candidate, Nu-3, is being developed to treat infected diabetic foot ulcers (iDFU) using the company's proprietary Bisphosphocin® antimicrobial platform. Unlike many traditional antibiotics that target specific bacterial biochemical pathways, Nu-3 is designed to disrupt bacterial membranes through a physical mechanism of action. According to the company, this approach has demonstrated a high barrier to resistance in laboratory testing, including serial passage experiments intended to evaluate whether bacteria develop resistance over repeated exposure.
The company also reported broad-spectrum in vitro activity against bacterial strains exhibiting multiple resistance mechanisms, including mutations affecting antibiotic targets, beta-lactamase enzyme production and efflux pump activity. These resistance mechanisms are commonly associated with difficult-to-treat pathogens such as MRSA, VRE and other multidrug-resistant bacteria that continue to present major challenges in healthcare settings worldwide. While these findings remain preclinical and additional clinical studies are required, the data support the company's strategy of developing therapeutics designed to overcome some of the limitations of conventional antibiotics.
